NYEWASCO continues to enhance access to safe and improved sanitation through the implementation of the Upscaling Basic Sanitation for the Urban Poor Phase II (UBSUP II) project. The initiative targets low-income areas within the company’s service jurisdiction, with a focus on delivering sustainable and affordable sanitation solutions.

The UBSUP II programme is implemented through the Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF), supporting the delivery of improved sanitation services in underserved communities.

Under this programme, NYEWASCO has recorded significant progress in the expansion of sanitation infrastructure. To date, over 300 improved household sanitation facilities have been constructed in Majengo, Witemere, and Ruring’u. The facilities are designed to provide safe, hygienic, and dignified sanitation services to residents in underserved areas.

The current achievements build on earlier interventions implemented under Phase I of the programme, during which over 200 sanitation units were constructed in Witemere. The phased implementation approach has enabled the gradual scaling up of sanitation coverage within the service area.

In addition to infrastructure development, the UBSUP II project incorporates complementary components aimed at ensuring sustainability of services. These include hygiene promotion, community sensitization, safe faecal sludge management, and the involvement of private sector actors in sanitation service provision.

Community participation remains integral to the implementation process. Beneficiaries are engaged during project planning, mobilization, construction, and subsequent utilization of the facilities. This approach has contributed to increased ownership and improved adoption of recommended sanitation practices.

The implementation of improved sanitation facilities is expected to contribute to better public health outcomes through the reduction of sanitation-related diseases, as well as improved environmental conditions within the targeted areas. Furthermore, the provision of adequate sanitation enhances dignity, privacy, and overall quality of life for beneficiary households.

NYEWASCO remains committed to expanding the reach of sanitation services through strategic partnerships and continued investment in pro-poor initiatives. The UBSUP II project represents a key intervention in advancing equitable access to sanitation and supporting national development objectives.
