To mark World Bamboo Day 2026, NYEWASCO planted bamboo seedlings along the banks of River Chania at its Kangemi Sewer Treatment Plant. The exercise highlighted the role bamboo can play in protecting riverbanks and conserving water resources.
NYEWASCO staff were joined by representatives from CAS Consultants and M/S Moca Contractors Company Ltd for the planting exercise.
Bamboo was chosen for its potential to support soil conservation along the riverbank. As the seedlings grow and establish, their roots can help hold soil in place, while the vegetation provides cover that can reduce erosion. This is especially relevant along riverbanks, where exposed soil is vulnerable to being washed away during heavy rains.
Healthy riparian areas also provide a natural buffer between rivers and surrounding land. Planting and caring for suitable vegetation in these areas is one way to support the health of the River Chania ecosystem and protect water resources over time.
The benefits of this planting will depend on the seedlings becoming established. Their long-term care is therefore as important as the planting itself.
