On March 21, 2026, NYEWASCO joined the Nyeri County community and environmental stakeholders at the Hombe Forest Station to commemorate the International Day of Forests (IDF). This year’s global theme, “Forests and Economies,” provided a powerful backdrop for the day’s events, highlighting the often-overlooked reality that healthy forests are not just ecological treasures but the fundamental engines of our local and national economies. From supporting rural livelihoods to sustaining the complex ecosystems that drive agriculture and tourism, the economic value of a standing forest is immeasurable.
The celebration was marked by a hands-on tree-planting exercise, where NYEWASCO staff worked alongside community members to restore and expand the forest cover within the Hombe area. This activity served as a practical reaffirmation of our corporate commitment to environmental conservation. For a water utility, forest protection is a matter of operational necessity; forested watersheds act as natural sponges and filters, ensuring a steady, clean supply of water into our intakes. By investing time and resources into reforestation, NYEWASCO is directly investing in the long-term sustainability of our water sources and the resilience of our infrastructure against climate-related disruptions.
Beyond the immediate environmental benefits, our participation in this year’s IDF underscores a deep-rooted understanding of the “blue-green” economy. Healthy forests regulate the climate and stabilize the soil, preventing the siltation of rivers—a process that is essential for cost-effective water treatment and reliable distribution. When we protect the forest, we are protecting the economic well-being of our customers by safeguarding the natural systems that keep clean water accessible and affordable.
NYEWASCO’s dedication to these vital ecosystems remains a cornerstone of our corporate social responsibility. We recognize that our mission to enhance the quality of life through water services is inextricably linked to the health of the Hombe Forest and similar catchments across the region. As we look toward the future, we remain steadfast in our role as a guardian of these natural resources, ensuring that the vital link between forests, economies, and water remains strong for present and future generations. Through continued collaboration and active conservation, we are helping to build a greener, more prosperous, and water-secure Nyeri.
